The Future of Connectivity: Rural Broadband's Mission to Revolutionize Internet Access in Ireland
In today’s world, connectivity is as essential as electricity and water. The demand for high-speed broadband has never been greater. Here at Rural Broadband, in partnership with National Broadband Ireland (NBI), we have taken on the immense yet exciting challenge of designing, building, and operating a high-speed fibre broadband network for rural Ireland. Significant progress has been made, with much more on the horizon. Here’s what you need to know about Rural Broadband and the National Broadband Plan (NBP) so far.

What is the NBP?
Launched in 2020, the National Broadband Plan is the Irish government’s initiative to provide high-speed fibre broadband to every premises in the country, including homes, schools, and businesses in cities, towns, villages, remote townlands, and even the picturesque islands off our coast. It’s the largest telecommunications project ever undertaken by the State, involving the deployment of fibre on approximately 1.5 million poles and the use of 142,000 kilometers of new fibre cable—enough to circle the globe nearly three times! The network’s services will reach everyone in the rollout area, covering 23% of the population across over half a million premises.
Who Are We?
Rural Broadband is a family-owned, 100% Irish company providing local jobs to local people. Working closely with NBI, which was established specifically for this monumental task, we are committed to laying the vital infrastructure needed to ensure that every Irish home, business, and school has access to the fastest internet connection possible. Our team includes some of the most talented individuals in Ireland and around the world, with extensive experience in delivering projects on the scale of the NBP. This includes developing, building, and operating networks, and coordinating all elements required to finance and deliver a project of this size and complexity.
The Intervention Area
You may have heard the term ‘intervention area’ in relation to the rollout but might not be sure what it means. High-speed fibre broadband services will be delivered through ‘intervention’ by the State in areas where private companies have indicated no plans to invest. The State Intervention Area for the National Broadband Plan includes over 564,000 premises and over 1.1 million people. It also covers any new homes built in the Intervention Area over the next 25 years. This area is searchable by address and Eircode.
Accomplishments to Date
Rural Broadband and NBI’s team of over 2,800 people has made excellent progress in laying the groundwork for a truly connected future. The initial phases of this enormous project focused on detailed surveys (with nearly half a million completed), planning, and establishing the necessary infrastructure to begin the rollout. Despite the challenges of deploying a network across varied and often difficult Irish terrain, NBI has successfully laid fibre-optic cables and installed the necessary technology in many parts of the country. Rural Broadband is delighted to consistently deliver results on time and within budget, and we are particularly proud of NBI's achievements in laying infrastructure on several islands off the Irish coast.
The ambitious scope of the NBP brings numerous logistical, technical, and environmental challenges. Ireland’s diverse topography and infrastructure require innovative solutions and meticulous planning to ensure a robust and resilient network. The project’s scale also necessitates extensive coordination with local communities and government bodies to meet the needs of each area. We are pleased to have built strong relationships with various government bodies throughout this process and will continue to do so in the future.
